Who Am I?
I am a Christian Licensed Clinical Social Worker. You will notice
that I put “Christian” first in my description of
myself. My faith is an integral part of who I am and the work
that I do. God has blessed me with opportunities to get education
and have many life experiences, both personally and professionally,
which enable me to do the work He has called me to do. I view the work
I do as ministry.
As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), the emphasis of my license
is directed at helping people achieve more adequate, satisfying and
productive lives. My license allows me to provide counseling and
psychotherapy of a non-medical nature with individuals of all ages,
families and groups. This means that I have received additional
supervision and training after I obtained my Master of Social Work
degree and have passed written and oral testing by the State of
California.
I am married and have two teenage children. I am active in my church and in the community.
Focus of Practice
As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, my training has been broad based
to include many areas that affect individuals and families: depression,
anxiety, communication within
relationships, addictions, parenting, sexual abuse, adoptive parenting,
infertility, crisis pregnancy, infidelity, and life transitions and
changes. I realize that though a person comes into my office for
one or two primary reasons, there are other aspects of their life such
as family dynamics and history, work pressures, and other life
realities that are part of what they are living with on a daily basis.
Though we will work on your primary reasons for coming in, I believe it
is also important to pay attention to the other factors in your life
which may be contributing or affecting your current
situation.
My Philosophy:
Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you WILL
carry it on to completion until the day of Christ
Jesus. Philippians 1:6 (New International
Version)
“For I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord,
“plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a
HOPE and a FUTURE. Then you will call upon me and come and pray
to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me
when you seek me with all your heart. I WILL be found by
you,” declares the Lord. Jeremiah 29:11-14a (New
International Version)
The verses listed above are just some of my favorites. I find
them so encouraging for myself and for others. These verses are
just some of those found in the Bible that speak to the principle that
God is at work in us constantly, sometimes in spite of us, and we need
to be willing to allow Him to do this work. And…. in order
for God to do this work in us we need to be willing to do a lot of work
ourselves. Our part of allowing God to do his work might mean
looking at painful aspects of our lives, behavior, and thought-
patterns that we have allowed to creep into our lives.
All of us have times in our lives when we need to have someone come
alongside of us and help us see through the fog of confusion, doubt, or
trouble which we are experiencing. All of us go through different
seasons of growth and learning, which depending on how we choose to
react to this season, can either mature us or make us bitter and
“stuck” trying to figure out questions like, “WHY is
this happening to ME?” or “WHY did God LET this happen to
me?”
It is important to find the right match for you in choosing your
counselor or therapist. It is important for you to find a counselor or
therapist that you are comfortable working with as you entrust the
knowledge of important events in your life to this person.
Educational Background
I graduated from Calvin College in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts degree
in Sociology and a minor in Social Work. Calvin College is a
Christian liberal arts college that encourages its students to
integrate faith with academic study.
I continued my education at Sacramento State University, Sacramento, CA
and graduated in 1986 with a Master’s degree in Social Work in
1986. My focus of study was Mental Health, in particular working
with Children and Families.
Further areas of study include: attachment and bonding, grief and
loss, recovery issues, and life long issues of families built through
adoption.
Professional Experience
-Twenty years in working with birthparents, adoptive parents, and
adults and children who joined their family by adoption. I have worked
in private domestic adoption, the child welfare system, and
